Support the facilitation of entry into force of the Basel Convention Ban Amendment

Background

The “Ban Amendment” provides for the prohibition by each Party included in the proposed new Annex VII (Parties and other States which are members of the OECD, EC, Liechtenstein) of all transboundary movements to States not included in Annex VII of hazardous wastes covered by the Convention that are intended for final disposal, and of all transboundary movements to States not included in Annex VII of hazardous wastes covered by paragraph 1 (a) of Article 1 of the Convention that are destined for reuse, recycling or recovery operations.

Objectives

  • Provide relevant information to those Parties that have not yet ratified, accepted, acceded to or approved the Ban Amendment and that were Parties to the Convention when the Ban Amendment was adopted at COP 3;
  • Support Parties with addressing specific needs at the national level to enable the Parties concerned to ratify, accept, accede to or approve the Ban Amendment;
  • Contribute to assisting developing countries that are facing specific challenges with regard to prohibiting the import of hazardous wastes.
