Technical guidelines for the environmentally sound management of wastes consisting of elemental mercury and wastes containing or contaminated with mercury

Pursuant to paragraph 5 of Decision BC-11/5, Japan has taken lead in the revision of the Basel Convention Technical guidelines for the environmentally sound management of wastes consisting of elemental mercury and wastes containing or contaminated with mercury. Having consulted with the small intersessional working group, Japan has prepared the draft updated technical guidelines for publication on the Convention website by 31 December 2013 as downloadable by the link below.

The Secretariat would like to thank Japan for its willingness to take lead in the abovementioned work and also the SIWG members who have provided comments on the first revised draft of the technical guidelines.

The Secretariat would also remind Parties and others to submit comments on the draft updated technical guidelines to the lead country and to the Secretariat, as requested by the Conference of the Parties to the Basel Convention (paragraph 6 of decision BC-11/5), by 31 March 2014.
