Third meeting of the Basel Convention Plastic Waste Partnership working group

Punta del Este, Uruguay, from 23 to 25 November 2022

Highlights: The third meeting of the Plastic Waste Partnership working group was held in Punta del Este, Uruguay, from 23 to 25 November 2022. The meeting, held back-to-back with the first session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, was an opportunity for the group to take stock of the progress made in its project groups and to plan for upcoming developments and discussed activities that can promote working group cooperation and coordination.

Specifically, the working group:

  •  presented available outputs in the implementation of its workplan and considered them as a basis to develop the workplan for the biennium 2024-25;
  • discussed working modalities of the PWP, including the membership and financial arrangements;
  • agreed on the organization of an annual forum on extended producer responsibility schemes for plastic waste to promote working group cooperation and coordination.

Moreover, on this occasion, the BRS Secretariat launched the digital version of a photography book, featuring the finalist entries of the PWP’s Plastic is Forever photo competition and provided an update on the PWP pilot project programme and delivered a webinar, broadcasted as a side event to the meeting to showcase some of the projects currently being implemented around the world.

Organizers and partners: The third meeting of the Plastic Waste Partnership working group was organized in collaboration with the Basel and Stockholm Conventions Regional Centre in Uruguay (BCCC-SCRC Uruguay) thanks to the generous financial support provided by the European Union and Norway.
