First meeting of the Basel Convention Plastic Waste Partnership working group

Beau Vallon, Seychelles, from 02 March to 05 March 2020

Highlights: At its fourteenth meeting in 2019, the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the Basel Convention, through Decision BC-14/13, decided to establish a working group of the Basel Convention Partnership on Plastic Waste (PWP). Through the same decision, the COP adopted the terms of reference for the PWP, including the workplan for the working group for the biennium 2020-2021. The objective of the PWP is to improve and promote the environmentally sound management of plastic waste at the global, regional and national levels and prevent and minimize their generation so as to, among other things, reduce significantly and in the long-term eliminate the discharge of plastic waste and microplastics into the environment, in particular the marine environment. More information on the PWP is available here.

Organizers and partners: The first meeting of the Plastic Waste Partnership working group will be hosted by the Government of the Seychelles and is organized by the Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions in collaboration with the Africa Institute for Environmentally Sound Management of Hazardous and Other Wastes, as the Basel Convention Regional Centre for English-speaking countries in South Africa (BCRC South Africa). Generous financial support has been provided by Canada, Japan, Norway and Switzerland.

Working languages: English will be the working language of the meeting.
