The Objectives of the workshops are:
- Develop technical and institutional capacity at the national level to prevent and respond to incidents making use of the International Health Regulations (WHO, 2005) alert system and procedures; (in cooperation with the WHO)
- Improve the coordinated implementation and the enforcement of multilateral environmental agreements that are relevant for the monitoring and control of transboundary movements of hazardous waste and chemicals, including their environmentally sound management, such as the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions;
- Ensure the environmentally sound management of MARPOL wastes, strengthening the institutional capacity of the port reception facilities and improving the sea-land interface between MARPOL and the Basel Convention (in cooperation with the IMO).
- Enhance coordination among relevant local and national authorities of the health, environment, and maritime communities involved in the management of transboundary movements and the disposal of hazardous waste and chemicals through ports.
Enforcement officers, customs, conventions focal points, competent authorities, designated national authorities, government officials from health, environment, maritime and port authorities.
