Environmentally sound management of hazardous wastes and other wastes

Environmentally sound management is central to the implementation of the Basel Convention. It supports the protection of human health and the environment from adverse effects that may result from the generation, transboundary movement and management of hazardous wastes and other wastes.

Work under the Basel Convention has led to the development of the Framework for the environmentally sound management of hazardous wastes and other wastes, as well as a practical ESM Toolkit to support implementation.

The ESM Framework provides the overall approach. It sets out a common understanding of environmentally sound management and identifies tools and strategies to promote its implementation.

The ESM Toolkit brings together practical tools, guidance, manuals, checklists and factsheets developed under the Basel Convention.
