Stakeholder Workshop for the Implementation of the Plastic Waste Amendments of the Basel Convention in Ghana

23-25 September 2025, Accra, Ghana

Highlights: A national training took place in-person from 23 to 25 September 2025 in Accra, Ghana, in the context of the project “Strengthening Enforcement in Ghana under Norad 2.5”. This project aims to strengthen national actions for the implementation of the Plastic Waste Amendments, enforcement of the Basel Convention, prevention and combatting illegal traffic in plastic wastes. It’s funded with the generous contribution of the Norwegian Development Agency (NORAD).

The project is implemented by the Environment Protection Agency, with the support of the Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm (BRS) conventions.

Meeting objectives: The training aimed to strengthen participants’ knowledge and capacity while facilitating the exchange of experiences on:

  • Implementing and enforcing the obligations and procedures under the Basel Convention and its Plastic Waste Amendments (PWA);
  • Promoting effective control of transboundary movements of waste, including plastic waste;
  • Classifying plastic waste;

Target audience: This training targeted the representatives from Environment Protection Agency, the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Customs, Importers, civil society organizations and waste companies and recyclers in Ghana.
