Call for information: Follow-up to the fourteenth meeting of the Open-ended Working Group

After initiating work to improve the prior informed consent procedure (decision BC-16/2), the Conference of the Parties requested the Secretariat to report to the Open-ended Working Group. During its fourteenth meeting, held from 25 to 28 June 2024 in Geneva, the Open-ended Working Group of the Basel Convention (OEWG-14) welcomed the progress made by the lead country in consultation with the small intersessional working group on improving the prior informed consent procedure.

Parties and observers were invited to submit to the Secretariat, by 31 August 2024, comments on the draft report as revised during the OEWG-14 meeting, and in particular to provide views on which options the Conference of the Parties at its seventeenth meeting should identify to work on as a priority.

The information transmitted by Parties and observers on challenges in the implementation of the prior informed consent procedure and on best practices, possible approaches, initiatives and views to improve the functioning of the procedure is set out in the table below.
