Marine litter and microplastics: Promoting the environmentally sound management of plastic wastes and achieving the prevention and minimization of the generation of plastic wastes (Norad-Project).

Plastic wastes and marine plastic litter is an environmental problem occurring on a global scale today. Developing countries in particular are facing challenges in managing the rapidly growing volume of plastic waste. Therefore, capacity building in waste management is an area where much more effort needs to be mobilized. Many regions have identified marine litter as a problem, but the overriding issue remains the absence of, or poorly developed, waste management systems in large parts of the world.

The Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions is therefore especially happy that Norway through its Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD) has approved a project proposal concerning the environmentally sound management of plastic wastes, the project entitled “Marine litter and microplastics: Promoting the environmentally sound management of plastic wastes and achieving the prevention and minimization of the generation of plastic wastes”.

The objectives of the project are tightly aligned with those of many development agencies tackling the problem of plastic waste, marine litter and microplastic: 1) Prevent and significantly reduce marine litter and microplastics from sources in partner countries; 2) Infrastructure and systems for waste management, including material recycling, for waste from land-based activities in partner countries are improved; 3) Global commitments and national and regional instruments to prevent marine litter and microplastics are strengthened.

The “Norad-Project” is implemented in Ghana and Bangladesh, in cooperation with Basel and Stockholm convention regional centers in Indonesia and Nigeria.
