The BRS Secretariat, subject to availability of funding, provides technical assistance to support Parties for the environmentally sound management of plastic waste, and the implementation of the Plastic Waste Amendments under the Basel Convention. A key delivery mechanism of technical assistance is through the funding, facilitation and support of pilots which seek to improve plastic waste management. There are two initiatives, through which Parties and stakeholders can submit proposals for selection.
- The Small Grants Programme (SGP) on plastic waste: SGP projects focus on identifying low-cost high impact pilot projects on the ground, with implementation supported by Basel Convention regional centres.
- PWP pilot projects: these projects are a part of the work of the Plastic Waste Partnership, which has a working group that oversees the selection and implementation of projects.
Across both programs, proposals need to address at least one of the following areas: plastic waste prevention and minimization; environmentally sound management of plastic waste such as collection and recycling, sustainable financing mechanisms for plastic waste management such as take-back systems; transboundary movements of plastic waste; and outreach, education and awareness-raising.
Further information on the process for proposals and modalities for selection can be found on the respective pages.
