Technical assistance activities can also include projects to test guidelines, guidance and tools which have been developed to support the ESM of plastic waste under the Basel Convention. This includes the technical guidelines on the environmentally sound management of plastic waste; the practical guidance on the development of inventories of plastic waste, and the BRS plastic waste inventory toolkits.
Further information on the tools and guidelines tested, as well as the outputs and results can be found on the respective pages below:
- ESM technical guidelines: Technical assistance projects have involved piloting the implementation of the technical guidelines on the environmentally sound management of plastic wastes. This supports Parties to review and analyse national approaches to managing plastic waste to identify key gaps for improvement.
- National inventory of plastic waste: An activity included in many technical assistance projects is the development of a national inventory on plastic waste. Here Parties test the Basel Convention’s practical guidance on developing a plastic waste inventory, and implement the plastic waste inventory toolkits developed by the BRS Secretariat, in order to estimate the amount of plastic waste being generated, managed and mismanaged. Countries can use this information to better understand their national waste management systems and develop strategies for the environmentally sound management of plastic waste.
