Dakar, Senegal, 9–10 March 2026
Praia, Cabo Verde, 12–13 March 2026
Highlights: To support the effective implementation of the Basel Convention and strengthen national and regional capacities for addressing plastic pollution, two inception workshops were held in Dakar and Praia under a project funded by the French Facility for Global Environment (FFEM). These workshops brought together the BRS Secretariat, BCRC Senegal, the Ministry of Environment of Senegal, and the Ministry of Environment of Cabo Verde, along with national focal points, NGOs, and other institutions involved in the pilot project.
The inception workshops aimed to review and validate the project objectives and work plan, clarify roles and responsibilities among national stakeholders, and agree on next steps for both national and regional implementation. Together, the workshops officially launched the project and established the coordination mechanisms needed for successful delivery across the participating countries.
The project supports Cabo Verde, Senegal, and ten additional Francophone West African countries to strengthen legal, institutional, and technical capacities for the environmentally sound management of plastic waste, improve control of transboundary movements, and prevent plastic waste generation in line with the Basel Convention.
Target audience: The inception workshops are intended for national stakeholders involved in implementing the Basel Convention and national plastic pollution initiatives. This includes government institutions, national focal points, regional center representatives, civil society organizations, private sector actors, and informal sector groups contributing to plastic waste management and prevention activities.
Organizers: The inception workshops are organized by the Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions, in close collaboration with BCRC Senegal, the Ministry of Environment of Senegal, and the Ministry of Environment of Cabo Verde, under the FFEM-funded project, with the participation of national and regional partners involved in the project’s pilot activities.
Working languages: The working languages of the workshops will be French and Portuguese, with simultaneous English interpretation provided.
