Regional Workshop on Enforcement of the Plastic Waste Amendments under the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal

Dakar, Senegal from 9 to 10 July 2024

Highlights: Plastic waste, that ends in the environment, due to illegal traffic and mismanagement, constitutes a global issue. This situation also concerns the African region.

At the fourteenth meeting, the Conference of the Parties to the Basel Convention adopted the plastic waste Amendments (decision BC-14/12), effective from 1 January 2021, to enhance control over the transboundary movement of plastic waste and clarify the Convention’s scope as it applies to such waste.

A Regional Workshop on Enforcement of the Plastic Waste Amendments under the Basel Convention will take place in Dakar, Senegal, from 9 to 10 July for French-speaking African countries. The workshop seeks to support Parties in their efforts to strengthen their national legal frameworks for the enforcement of the Plastic Waste Amendments, promote the effective control of transboundary movement of plastic waste, and build capacity for enforcement operations, prevention, and combatting illegal traffic.

This workshop is part of the project “Improving Information Collection and Exchange on Plastic Waste in the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WERMU)”. This project is implemented in the scope of the Basel Convention Plastic Waste Partnership and funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD).

The Basel and Stockholm conventions Regional Centre located in Senegal (BCRC-SCRC Senegal) is organizing this workshop in close cooperation with the Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions.

The workshop's activities will focus on implementing and enforcing the plastic waste Amendments and on preventing and combatting the illegal trafficking of plastic waste.

Working language: French with English interpretation

Target audience: The workshops target contacts of the Parties to the Basel Convention (focal points and competent authorities) and customs in several French-speaking African countries
