Research and academic institutions contribute to fostering data collection, analyses and monitoring on the hazardous chemicals and wastes covered under the Convention. By promoting access to, and exchange of, data, e.g. on impacts of hazardous chemicals and wastes, or on options for risk management, they assist in implementing and evaluating the Convention.

Academia and research institutions may also be represented by observers at meetings of the Basel Convention bodies, in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Convention and the rules of procedure.
