E-waste Amendments

The fifteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Basel Convention (face-to-face segment of COP-15, 6-17 June 2022) adopted amendments to Annexes II, VIII and IX to the Convention, with the objectives of enlarging the control of transboundary movements of e-waste and making all electronic and electrical waste subject to the prior informed consent (PIC) procedure.

The amendments entered into force for all Parties that had not submitted a notification of non-acceptance on expiry of six months from 1 July 2024, the date of the circulation of the communication by the depositary (paragraph 3 and subparagraph 2 (c) of Article 18), and took effect on 1 January 2025.

Any official statement concerning the status of ratification, acceptance, formal confirmation, approval or accession of the Basel Convention or any amendments thereto is solely within the competence of the Depositary of the Convention in New York (based on the provisions of the Convention). In accordance with Article 28 of the Convention, the Secretary-General of the United Nations is the Depository of this Convention.
