First phase activities were in completed in January 2010 and consisted in the development of a gaps and needs analysis for the coordinated implementation of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions and a technical mission to assess MARPOL reception facilities in the ports of Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar in cooperation with IMO. BCRC- Pretoria, South Africa is currently implementing the remaining phases of the project, in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment of Tanzania.
The second phase will consist in the development of a port waste management plan and procedures in relation to the environmentally sound management of hazardous wastes and chemicals for the Port of Dar es Salaam and one other Tanzanian port.
The third phase will consist in enhancement of implementation and enforcement capacity through training and capacity building.
