Highlights: The small intersessional working group on the strategic framework for the implementation of the Basel Convention will hold its fourth meeting in three parts: a first part was held online on Monday, 11 December 2023, Wednesday, 13 December 2023, and Thursday, 14 December 2023.
During the first part of its fourth meeting, the small intersessional working group revised a draft renewed strategic framework for the implementation of the Basel Convention prepared by the lead country, Canada. The outcome of the first part of the meeting is available in document UNEP/CHW/SF_SIWG.4/2/Rev.1 below. The agreed work plan for the small intersessional working group is set out in document UNEP/CHW/SF_SIWG.4/3/Rev.1 below.
The second part of the meeting was held online on 26-28 March 2024. The small intersessional working group continued its review of a draft renewed strategic framework for the implementation of the Basel Convention and agreed on the version to be submitted to the Open-ended Working Group at its fourteenth meeting (UNEP/CHW/SF_SIWG.4/2/Rev.3). The working group also revised its work plan leading up to the seventeenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (UNEP/CHW/SF_SIWG.4/3/Rev.2) and agreed to hold the third part of its meeting face to face in the week of 7 October 2024 in Geneva.
The third part of the meeting will take place on 7 and 8 October 2024 in Geneva, Switzerland, back-to-back with the second part of the first meeting of the small intersessional working group on improving the functioning of the prior informed consent procedure. At the last part of its fourth meeting, the small intersessional working group will prepare a revised renewed strategic framework, for consideration and possible adoption by the Conference of the Parties at its seventeenth meeting, taking into account the outcome of the fourteenth meeting of the Open-ended Working Group. This part of the meeting will be organized thanks to the generous financial support provided by the Government of Japan.
