Parties may use this check list to identify gaps in their national legal framework and/or technical infrastructure for the management hazardous and other wastes and thereby gain a better understanding of the overall status of environmentally sound management in their country.
The twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties agreed to include provision for the development of a questionnaire or check list for self-assessment of national environmentally sound management capacity in the work programme of the expert working group. At its fifth meeting and intersessionally, the expert working group developed such a check list consisting of three tables, each of which serves to evaluate a particular aspect of environmentally sound management. The three tables cover the assessment of the legal framework, the status of individual waste streams, and measures to promote environmentally sound management, respectively. The check list is set up to quickly identify gaps in national environmentally sound management policies and infrastructure, as well as to provide reference materials to address such gaps. Regular assessments may serve as a basis to monitor the improvement of national environmentally sound management capacity over the years.
