Training Controlling Transboundary Movements of Plastic Waste and Preventing and Combatting Illegal Traffic

Accra, Ghana, 23 June 2023

Highlights: The training is taking place in the context of the project on marine litter and microplastics: promoting the environmentally sound management of plastic wastes and achieving the prevention and minimization of the generation of plastic wastes (BRS-Norad-1) with the generous financial support of the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation, Government of Norway.

The purpose of the training is to strengthen the capacities of the Competent Authority to the Basel Convention, Customs and border control officers, environmental authorities, and law enforcement officers in Ghana with a view to promoting the effective control of transboundary movement of plastic waste and build capacity to prevent cases of illegal traffic.

Organizers: This training is jointly organized by the Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm (BRS) Conventions, the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology & Innovation (MESTI) and the Basel Convention Coordinating Centre in Nigeria (BCCC-Nigeria).

Meeting objectives: The objectives of the workshop include increasing the knowledge and skills of the target audience on the following:

  • Overview of the Basel Convention and transboundary movement of plastic waste;
  • Implementation of the Basel Convention and Plastic Waste Amendments in Ghana
  • Assessments and develop profiles for plastic waste;
  • Classification of plastic waste and HS codes;
  • Trends in import and export of plastic waste in Ghana;
  • Dealing with suspected cases of illegal traffic in plastic waste.

Target audience: This training will target the representatives from Environmental Authority, Customs and Border Enforcement Officers in Ghana
