Twelfth meeting of the Open-ended Working Group of the Basel Convention (OEWG-12)

Online, 1-3 September 2020 (online segment) and Nairobi, Kenya, March 2021 (face-to-face segment)

Highlights: On 9 July 2020, the Bureau of the OEWG of the Basel Convention agreed to hold the OEWG-12 according to two components consisting of an online segment and a face to face segment.

Online segment:

Two online sessions will be held in the first week of September (31 August – 4 September 2020) with a duration of three hours each. The sessions will consist of technical briefings and run through the entire OEWG-12 agenda in a consecutive manner. The online segment will benefit from interpretation into all six official languages of the United Nations.

Face to face segment:

An up to 4-day face to face meeting of the OEWG-12 will be held in March 2021, in Nairobi, Kenya, back to back with fifth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-5), subject to the availability of resources, a positive development of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) situation, as well as the availability of the meeting venue. Support for the participation of developing countries and countries with economies in transition will be provided for one participant per eligible Party, as per usual practice for OEWG meetings and subject to the availability of resources.

Further information on the working arrangements of both segments as agreed by the Bureau of the OEWG are contained here. Additional information will also be posted on the website in due course.

Registration for the online segment

Registration for Parties and observers to participate in the online segment, i.e. the two online sessions, is required.

All official registrations previously received from Parties and previously admitted observers for the OEWG-12 will be automatically considered as the official registrations for the online segment of the OEWG-12. Parties and observers can still make an update or a change to their delegation before Tuesday, 21 July 2020 by contacting the Secretariat’s registration focal point: Ms. Stéphanie Cadet, e-mails:; The same format of correspondence is to be followed than the one transmitting the initial registrations (i.e. for Parties, an official nomination letter from their Government or a note verbale from their Permanent Mission) and, as necessary, the updated registration form (available upon request).

Technical and other information for the online segment

Further information will be provided in the confirmation letters and on the meeting website on the working modalities of the online segment, including connection details and technical trials that will be arranged ahead of the online segment. A number of webinars will also be organized to support all participants in understanding how the online segment of OEWG-12 will operate.
