Twelfth meeting of the Open-ended Working Group of the Basel Convention (OEWG-12)

Online, 1 and 3 September 2020 (online segment) and 4 to 6 April, 2022 (face-to-face segment)

Highlights

On 9 July 2020, the Bureau of the OEWG of the Basel Convention agreed to hold the OEWG-12 in two components, consisting of an online segment and a face-to-face segment.

Online segment

The online segment consisted of two online sessions held over two days, on Tuesday, 1 September 2020 and on Thursday, 3 September 2020. Further information on the online segment is available here.

Face to face segment

Through a written procedure after the OEWG-12 Bureau meeting on 18 November 2021, the OEWG Bureau agreed that the face-to-face segment of OEWG-12 will be held from 4 to 6 April 2022, at the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON), United Nations Avenue, Gigiri, Nairobi, Kenya. Preparatory meetings, including regional and Bureau meetings, will be held on Sunday, 3 April 2022.

Whilst the format of the meeting will be face-to-face, there will be a possibility for online participation in the meeting, in accordance with the rules of procedure, for those who are unable to attend in person due to the continuation of the COVID-19 pandemic.

For those participating in person, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the meeting will be subject to general and specific guidance and meeting restrictions, in accordance with guidelines developed by the United Nations Office in Nairobi and taking into account the restrictions put in place by the host country, Kenya. All delegates who intend to participate in the meeting are required to confirm that they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

In principle, the provisional agenda for the meeting remains the same as for its online segment, although certain agenda items have been prioritised by the Bureau for consideration during the face-to-face segment. A tentative schedule for the meeting will be issued in due course. Additional pre-session documents will also be made available below.
