Final Workshop for the BRS-Norad-1 Project in Sri Lanka

Colombo, Sri Lanka, 14 - 15 June 2023

Background: The project ‘Marine litter and microplastics: promoting the environmentally sound management of plastic waste and achieving the prevention and minimization of the generation of plastic waste’ (BRS-Norad-1), financed by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad) with additional funding provided by the Government of the Netherlands, seeks to prevent and significantly reduce marine litter and microplastics by strengthening capacity in in Ghana and Sri Lanka as well as at the regional and global levels. The project activities are now being finalized in both countries.

Meeting objectives: The workshop objectives are

  • To raise stakeholders’ awareness and understanding of the outcomes and status of the project activities.
  • To identify the next steps that are needed to continue the work across the project’s components.
  • To discuss stakeholders’ roles and responsibilities in implementing these steps.
  • To enhance the project’s sustainability and, where applicable, facilitate replicability of relevant activities.

Target audience: The workshop targets national stakeholders with a role in plastic waste management, including relevant Ministries, other government entities (e.g. customs), the private sector (e.g. recyclers, packaging companies, hotels), civil society and academia.
