Fact sheets on specific waste streams

The fact sheets on specific waste streams provide a quick overview of key information on selected priority waste streams.

At its first and successive meetings, as well as intersessionally, the expert working group on environmentally sound management developed a first series of fact sheets on specific waste streams. Each fact sheet is tailored to a different target audience. The fact sheet series is comprised of a fact sheet with general information on the implementation of environmentally sound management of wastes followed by six fact sheets addressing specific waste streams, namely: electrical and electronic waste (e-waste); waste vehicles; medical or healthcare waste; waste lead-acid batteries; waste oils; waste pneumatic tyres.

A first draft version of the fact sheets was submitted to the twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties, which agreed to include provision for their further development and finalization in the work programme of the expert working group. Accordingly, the expert working group prepared a revised version of the fact sheets for submission to the tenth meeting of the Open-ended Working Group. The latter welcomed the revised fact sheets and set out a process for their revision based on comments received (OEWG-10/2). The Open-ended Working Group also requested that the fact sheets be submitted to the thirteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties for its consideration.

Two other fact sheets on mercury wastes and household wastes were initially part of this series. However, given the ongoing activities following the adoption of the Minamata Convention on Mercury and the establishment of the informal group on household waste, the expert working group agreed at its fourth meeting that no further work be undertaken on these two fact sheets.

General Information: Implementation of ESM of wastes This fact sheet provides general information that is common to the environmentally sound management of different waste streams.
Electrical and electronic waste (E-waste) This fact sheet provides information on the environmentally sound management of electrical and electronic waste (e-waste). It is primarily intended for use by waste recyclers.
Waste vehicles
This fact sheet provides information on the environmentally sound management of waste vehicles, also sometimes referred to as end-of-life vehicles. It is primarily intended for use by dismantlers and recyclers.
Medical or healthcare waste This fact sheet provides information on the environmentally sound management of healthcare waste, also sometimes referred to as medical waste. It is primarily intended for use by waste managers at healthcare facilities, but also contains information useful to transporters and operators of disposal facilities.
Waste lead-acid batteries This fact sheet provides information on the environmentally sound management of waste lead-acid batteries, also sometimes referred to as spent lead-acid batteries or used lead-acid batteries. It is primarily intended for use by collectors of waste lead-acid batteries, transporters and operators of facilities that store, recycle or otherwise dispose waste lead-acid batteries.
Waste oils This fact sheet provides information on the environmentally sound management of waste oils, also sometimes referred to as used oils or spent oils. It is primarily intended for use by policy makers.
Pneumatic tyres This fact sheet provides information on the environmentally sound management of waste pneumatic tyres, also sometimes referred to as end-of-life tyres or scrap tyres. It is primarily intended for use by waste tyre transporters, collectors and recyclers, and operators of facilities that store, recycle or otherwise dispose waste tyres.
